Im looking for demonstration video clip for correct technic for a spin turn. Also where and when to use it description.
Hi David,
There is a great youtube video by some Dutch players executing this skill. Search for Hockey Individual Skills uploaded by fatigazo and look at 3m45s in and you'll see the forehand and reverse skill demonstrated.
It is important to know that this technique can be used two different ways tactically e.g. to keep possession (wider arc) or to eliminate a defender (tighter more controlled arc).
Some key coaching points:
- Keep a low squat body position
- Start with feet shoulder width apart.
- Use split hands grip - one at the top and one midway down.
- Make sure the hands are pushed away from the body to keep the ball away from the feet.
- Pivot on one leg with their centre of gravity over the one leg.
- Drag the ball round slightly behind the turn (arms more at 2 or 3 o clock position.)
- If they have problems controlling the ball in the spin, get them to slightly change the angle of the head (instead of being square on the ball, it is should be angled in so that the more of the head is on the outside).
- Progress this skill by adding acceleration to the end of it when your players become competent at it.
- You can also make it easier by getting the players to do the skill in ultra slow motion before speeding it up gradually. Good luck and let me know how you get on.
Good luck David. Let me know how you get on. Cheers
