I have been advised by a very experienced coach the best thing for players here is to play little scrimmage games and use the rules.

We are using the taking player playing the ball about a foot backwards, with a 5m behind them player moving onto the ball to send to the original player who has sprinted and turned to face the incoming ball (ensuring the 5m distance)just inside the D (then deflecting/reverse sweep shot) very effective. Also IF the umpire is up to the rules well, a direct hit to a player whose stick is on the floor outside the D, and therefore touches the ball BEFORE entering the D works well too, if the ball is just further away from the dotted line a player can just stand outside the D for the same first touch to mean a big hit towards CAN be legal. Big problem many umpires blow as you hit, and don't wait for the outcome to lead to a successful pass.
