Coaching beginners

Coaching beginners

This is my first year coaching field hockey and I am coaching beginners, a U8 team. Any drills geared towards beginners?

Well Tina, this is a very general question, so my answer will be general as well.

  • keep your drills simple but active (movement)
  • use drills for one player or in pairs (if more players are involved, there are too many chances of things going wrong in a drill so the drill will not work)
  • change your drill every 5 minutes. These changes are very simple%3A speed (ie. try as quick as you can), direction (clockwise, anti clockwise), distance (between players, distance of running) and pressure (add a stick as a defender or a real live on not being active but just being there). This way your players will not get bored from doing the same over and over again in the same drill.
  • Don't let faillures make you feel bad. Children in this age group make a lot of mistakes. That is normal. It will take some time to learn and some are faster learners than others.
  • have fun!

Regards,

Carel
