DESCRIPTION

Basic tackling skills.

Tackler to start in a low position.

Tackler to position their head behind the player, squeeze their arms around the player an drive in forward off their knees.

COACHING POINTS

Always give tackled person a ball – this removes the temptation of breaking the fall and allows players to practise ball management in contact from the start.

Correct way of going down with the ball in a tackle.

Person being tackled should 'twist' their body so that they land on their back.

Bulldog on knees:

Simple game for teaching tackling when on your knees.

Starting with initially two tacklers and the rest as attackers, players must try to go from one side to the other with a ball in their hands without being tackled.

If a player is tackled they must throw their ball out of the area and become a tackler in the next round of the game.

Walking tackle:

The player with the ball walks slowly in front of the other player.

As the ball carrier is walking the defender should time their move so that they in the correct position to tackle when the player is in front of them.

At this point the tackler should wrap their arms tightly around the other player's knees, position their head behind their bum and drive with their shoulder to bring the player to the ground.

Falling to their bum before rolling onto their shoulder, once on the floor the other player should place the ball above their head on the ground.
