DESCRIPTION

Introducing the skill of 'striking' for the ball.

Hooker against a tackle pad, with the scrum half punting in the ball from the left hand side.

Hooker to push the ball back, with the right leg, around the outside of the left leg.

COACHING POINTS

Once demonstrated striking for the ball and all players understand, let them practice the skill in a fun way.

1 on 1 scrummage (on feet)

Once players' individual position is correct on the machine, progress to 1 on 1 scrummage on the feet.

Facing each other in a squat position, touch (with hands on each others shoulders), heads to the left, and engage.

3 on 3 engagement procedure.

Front Rows coming together. Each prop touches the opponents upper arm and then pause before the front rows meet.

The sequence should be: "Crouch, bind, set".

Coaches should replicate this call when practising to help players develop their timing and to assist the Referee

5 person scrum (mini rugby)

Let the front row bind together first.

Second row binds together between their hips and shoulders, making sure that their hips are tight together.

Second row arms go around the outside of the props, binding onto their hips nice and tight.

Second row then comes off their knees to engage.

Groups of 2. Tackle Bag. -Players stand no more than 1m away from eachother.Â - Working player must get into strong T.O.P position.Â - Then explode firing from the glutes and hips into the bag opposite.Â - After the intial impact hold and squeeze for 4/5 seconds.Â Â

Groups of 3. - 2 players get into a strong T.O.P position. - Another player starts to to standing press ups on to the heads of the 2 players. - This encoruages neck and core strenth essential for a safe scrum.
