Rugby: Contest Line Outs

DESCRIPTION

One player throws the ball in to 5 players standing side by side. One player to stand in the scrum half position so as to be ready to receive a pass.

Pupils should :-

Attack the ball by moving forwards.

Catch the ball in two hands.

Players on either side of the jumper need to protect the jumper after they have caught the ball.

COACHING POINTS

Ensure that the lineout is properly spaced.

Ensure the ball is won by catching the ball cleanly.

Ensure no barging or lifting.

Progression:

Allow opposition to drive when ball is caught.

Practice off the top and catch and drive

Always start with a line out i.e. Trower two catchers and four backs.

Lineout Game

The coach calls out the number of people that required in the lineout, together with a team name to. The hooker throws the ball in for both teams to compete for the ball. The lineout is over when the scrum half receives the ball.

If a team wins the ball and the coach has called their team name then they receive 1 point. If the team wins the line out against the coaches call then they receive 2 points.

Piston Jumping

The ball starts with one pod. As they are lifted the jumper is held in the air until the next pod is lifted. When the next pod reaches the top of their jump the ball is lobbed to that jumper. Once the ball has been caught they can go back to ground.

The drill continues in this way, with players working together in a piston like fashion.

3 vs 2 - Sprint to support

15m x 35m Grid.

1 Attacker starts on the half way line of the grid, with the other two outside of the grid back to back with two defenders. On the command the one attacker runs around the red cone, with the other one running around the blue cone - likewise for the defenders.

Once they have run around the cones a 3 vs 2 will develop. If the player with the ball passes immediately this will give a 3 vs 2 in the middle of the pitch.

Pod Movement Game

Lineout pod of three players line up. Players at the front and back facing inwards towards the middle player. The lineout taker initiates the game with a call and movement to either the left or right. The three pod players follow to that side. The front and back players lift the middle player in the pod in the air and the thrower throws the ball to the middle player. The front and back players then bring the middle player down and the game resets.

The aim of the exercise is to develop core activation buy pulling your core in and at the same time fire your glutes forward and squeeze them tight, this is the activation movement we are looking for when we throw the ball this will then keep you in a strong position.

Working On Lineout Pod Movement

Lay out four cones in a square. Lineout thrower stands on one cone and three lineout pod players on the next cone round. The front and back players face inwards towards the middle player. The lineout taker throws to the middle players as the front and end players lift the middle man into the air. The lineout taker then runs to support and receives the pass from the middle man as they are on the way down. The lineout taker is then in place, and the three pod players run round to the next cone. The game has effectively reset, and the lineout takes place again. Overall there will be four lineout throws in the game.
