Rugby: Drop Kick

Great site and excellent drills. Easy to understand and apply in training....
Tyrone, Rugby Coach

DESCRIPTION

Can be practiced with all players but specifically for the kickers of the team for start off kicking and tactical point scoring.

1 ball, cones to set up target zones etc.

COACHING POINTS

Hold ball nearly vertical with bottom hand, with top hand steadying rather than holding. Keep head over the ball during run up planting your non-kicking foot close to where you will drop the ball to keep your body balanced.

Drop the ball, do not throw it into the air first. Kick the ball as it begins to rise from the ground with the inside ball and laces of your foot. Follow through with kicking leg. The body’s hips and shoulders should be straight on to ensure all momentum has gone through the ball.

PROGRESSION

Set out targets with cones to pinpoint drop kicks for start off and 22 drop out kicks.
