Rugby: Passing Race

What a fantastic tool. I've found a few drills that are unfamiliar,...
Wes, Rugby Coach

DESCRIPTION

  • Using just one hand they should pass the ball to each other.
  • The pass should come from on, or behind the hip.
  • They should make 10 passes on one hand, and then 10 passes on the opposite hand.
  • That's it, lets get going - it's a race.
  • Any dropped balls - and your group has to start again.
  • That's it, get working.

COACHING POINTS

Don't feel that your need to focus on all of the following coaching points. Choose the points that take into account your players ability, and your own training and session goals.

  • Receivers hands should be out in order to present a target.
  • The passer holds the ball on their hip using one hand as the passing hand and one hand at the guiding hand.
  • Their passing hand should be just over half way down the ball.
  • The support hand is slightly ahead of the passing hand.
  • The elbow on the passing arm should be raised.
  • Players can generate more power by starting their pass from further behind the hip.
  • Their fingers should be spread wide, with their hand facing downward. just under the ball.
  • Their thumb can be facing the target.
  • The nose of the ball faces the target, with the nose/point of the ball facing up slightly up.
  • The pass is executed by the passer raising their passing hand towards the target drawing the pass across the body, drawing their hand up and across the ball to create the spin, with the ball rolling off the tips of the fingers.
  • The ball passing hand follows through with the ball, finishing in the direction of the receiver, as does the supporting hand.
  • Use the correct size of ball for the age group.
  • Don't increase the distance or speed of the pass until players can consistently execute a steady pass over a short distance.
  • Make sure that players develop their ability to spin off both hands.
  • Can they make the pass without a spin, try - clock the time needed to make 20 passes with a spin and 20 without. Any difference?
  • Question players, try not to tell - have players suggest and take control of their own training. If you can have players discover.

PROGRESSION

You can progress this by increasing the distance between the cones, so at the end of each set of passes they take on or half a step back. Change the distances to suit the ability level of your players and yor own training goals.
