Hi Shirley,
Tackling in field hockey is a crucial skill that involves taking the ball away from an opponent while maintaining control and avoiding fouls. Here are some key tips on how to tackle effectively in field hockey:
Body Position:
Maintain a low and balanced stance with your knees slightly bent. This provides stability and allows you to move quickly in any direction.
Stick Position:
Keep your stick low to the ground, close to the ball, and parallel to the opponent's stick. This makes it harder for the opponent to manoeuvre around you.
Timing:
Time your tackle well. Wait for the right moment when the opponent is less likely to change direction quickly or protect the ball effectively.
Distance and Reach:
Maintain a proper distance from your opponent to avoid committing fouls. Extend your reach by using your stick to poke or block the ball, but be careful not to trip or impede the opponent.
Use the Reverse Stick:
Develop your skills in using the reverse stick for tackling. This can be an effective way to surprise your opponent and gain control of the ball.
Stay Goal Side:
Position yourself between the opponent and the goal (stay goal side) to limit their options and force them away from dangerous areas.
Hope this helps.
Archie
