COACHING POINTS

Grip

'V' between thumb and index finger runs down the edge of the stick
Right and left hand touching - This way they work together rather than in opposition

Stick

Place stick behind the ball - This is important as it gives a reference point
'Pick the stick up' with the arms first and then the hands
Clip the ball across to your partner

Ball

In line with the left heel

Body

Left shoulder at colleague
Knees bent 90 degrees
Butt of the stick level with the kneecaps

N.B. The head is in line with the ball but NOT over it

Balance

Weight finishes on the left foot
Toe of the stick to the sky

Video Techniques

Warm Up Circuit

Setup:

Lay out sticks on the ground about 1 metre apart.
Six sticks should be laid in a continuous straight line.
Five cones in a zig-zag formation.
Use ladders or a line of two cones close together (about 30cm between each pair).
Place a stick on a pair of cones x6, about 1 metre between each one.

The drill:

Players run in and out of the sticks
Players jump with feet together over the sticks (from left to right followed by right to left)
Run round the cones, the players should touch the cone with the inside hand each time
Players touch the pitch with one foot between each space
Players run through and over as fast as they can. Check that they lift their knees nice and high going over the hurdles.

Warm-up Games

Retention of possession - 2v2v2

2 teams combine to play 4 versus 2

All players must remain in the box
The attackers who lose the ball becomes the defenders
No first time passes
Push only no slap or hit passes

Correcting the players to run the ball in front of the body

This practice is good to teach players to run the ball in front rather then by their side and to close to the feet.
Ask the player to not move their feet while trying to push the ball as far forward as possible. Just before the player loses their balance they can start moving their feet while keeping the ball at the same distance throughout their run.

Common Mistake

Common mistake the ball being run by the side or behind the body you can see that the feet are also not pointing forward but slightly to the side.

Correcting the players to run the ball in front of the body

This practice is good to teach players to run the ball in front rather then by their side and to close to the feet. Ask the player to not move their feet while trying to push the ball as far forward as possible. Just before the player loses their balance they can start moving their feet while keeping the ball at the same distance throughout their run.

Correction technique

This exercise is very good for teaching players to run with the stick at the right angle. Make the players run with the ball with both their hands near the ground. and tell them that after a couple 5 meters they can come up slow to where they feel comfortable. This normally makes the players run lower then they where and also makes them keep the ball in front of them while running

First stage receiving

Ball each players have to stand next to the ball with the ball on the right. On the whistle the players should turn towards the ball spread their feet either side of the ball bend down and put the stick behing the ball. This would be the position the ball should be stopped. Repeat the practivce lots of times to make sure every player understands the position. Then progress to the passing of the ball in pairs.
