Hockey: Escape Through Gate - Contact, Dribble and Shoot

Excellent, used the drills at our first training session today with...
Shane, Hockey Coach

DESCRIPTION

Coach's objective: To promote forward vision and awareness of space

Purpose: To escape through the free gate

Structure:

Players work in threes.

The receiver collects a pass from behind. As the pass is played, the defender moves from their starting cone through either of the gates in an attempt to tackle the receiver.

The receiver must run through the unmarked gate with the ball under control

COACHING POINTS

The receiver should adopt a ski posture and stand sideways on to allow vision of both ball and defender.

At the moment before the pass the receiver should take their eyes from the ball and check which gate the defender is utilising.

Gate 1

• On reception the hands should be firm directing the ball towards gate 1
• The ball may leave the stick head allowing the receiver to accelerate away
• The receiver must look up following the first touch and before securing a second contact on the ball

Gate 2

• The ball must be allowed to run across the body
• Initial contact will be towards the left foot
• The arms - NOT THE HANDS - telescope to cushion the ball, this keeps the stick head square during initial contact and avoids the ball glancing off the stick head
• Ball contact should be made with the lower shaft rather than the stick head affording a larger control surface
• The eyes should be lifted as soon as the ball is under control
