Hockey: 1 v 1 practice relay

I love using Sportplan. It's been a great help for co-ordinating hockey...
Laura, Hockey Coach

DESCRIPTION

One player (the defender) stands between two cones and is only allowed to move left or right with stick and body in that area. The player with the ball has to try and cross the area with the ball under control. Once all players are across the area they should pass the ball to the next player who can come back the other way.

COACHING POINTS

  • Tip: The player with the ball should try and keep the defender moving left and right by sudden changes of direction with disguise (zigzag).
  • The lower the ability of the players the thinner and wider the area in which the defender is allowed to stop the attacker crossing. ( With beginners you may put the defender just on a line with 2 cones either side)
