European Handball:
*Explain to students they will be playing European handball and using the three basketball passes they learned in the previous lesson.
Divide students into two teams. If playing in the gym split the gym into 2 games with the benches down the middle and have three teams per side. (6 teams total) On each side of the gym will be 2 balls sitting on top of cones, these (goals) will be placed on opposite sides of the end zone. To score the ball must be knocked off the cone. Teams must advance the ball by passing to each other using one of the three basketball passes. If a pass is unsuccessful the other teams takes possession in the spot where the pass was dropped or knocked down. A bounce pass can only be used to score a goal.
Once a player catches the ball they can take one step sideways or backwards (inside) if out on the sport court (3 steps any direction). There will be a line of cones in front of the goal which no player can enter other than the defensive team to retrieve the ball. The ball must be knocked off the cone using a bounce pass, the ball can only bounce once off the ground.
If playing with 3 teams in the gym the team that is scored on runs on, places the ball back on the cone and begins the game from their goal. The team that scored remains on but begins as the defensive team.
Talent wins games, but chemistry wins championships. Building a positive team culture, establishing shared values, and developing trust creates teams that exceed the sum of their parts.
Getting to the rim is only half the battle. Converting against shot blockers and help defenders requires a toolkit of creative finishes. The best scorers have multiple ways to score at the basket.
Traditional positions are becoming obsolete. Modern basketball rewards versatile players who can handle, pass, shoot, and defend across multiple positions. Developing these skills creates valuable, adaptable players.
