This is the first drill we put in to coach our fast break. It involves all 3 possibilities of our first action.
This started as a drill to get as many reps as possible for the 5 to take the ball out of the net and hit their 1-2-3 throw to the 1 as fast and accurately as possible.
Once all three 1s (PGs) have made their passes to the 2, 3, and 4, the drill stops and resets (with a coach countdown from 5 seconds), including the shooters passing the balls back to the 5s on the other end (extra overhead pass practice).
1s should alternate their order so they are getting reps practicing the passes to all three spots. For instance:
Round 1: 1st, 2nd, 3rd
Round 2: 2nd, 3rd, 1st
Round 3: 3rd, 1st, 2nd
Repeat or modify as needed so the 1s make all three passes and passing to different people.
Skills stressed in this drill include:
Accurate long ball passing
Pushing the ball
Eyes up dribbling
Catching and shooting
Taking the ball out of the net
1-2-3 passing
Overhead passing
1st Action of the Fast Break
Full speed dribble and layup
From World Cup qualifiers to rule changes and global development initiatives, basketball continues to grow worldwide. Here's what 2026 has in store.
Talent wins games, but chemistry wins championships. Building a positive team culture, establishing shared values, and developing trust creates teams that exceed the sum of their parts.
Getting to the rim is only half the battle. Converting against shot blockers and help defenders requires a toolkit of creative finishes. The best scorers have multiple ways to score at the basket.
