Tennis: Second Serve Consistency

Sportplan has been very helpful in guiding me through my first year...
Bill, Newly qualified coach

DESCRIPTION

  • Player starts with the racquet behind the back.
  • Player tosses the ball and perform lifting action to hit the ball.
  • Player stops the motion after hitting the ball to control the trajectory of the racquet.

COACHING POINTS

  • Player works on the ability to develop a topspin second serve.
  • For players at all levels, second serve should be based on topspin because it guarantees good height over the net and desired consistency.
  • Many athletes make double faults because they hit the ball too flat or with slice spin.
  • Developing the motion to lift the ball up is a priority to control the ball and build a reliable second serve.
  • After getting control over this skill, coach can ask player to make as many serves as possible over the net in a row.
