WARM-UP: Defensive Slides:
Have children sit across the baseline to see how the drill works. (start the group chat like this)
SET-UP: Place cones like in the diagram using half a half court as a guide. Children line up behind the 2 starting cones like in the image.
When the whistle blows, the first 2 children sprint to the cone in front, as they get close to touching the cone, they chop up their steps and scream BALL, BALL, BALL with their other hands up as if they were stopping a defender.
They then touch the cone, slide to the cone on the side then jog backwards to the end of the line. Keep the line moving quickly.
VARIATION - Reverse the slide: When they touch the cone, they face the other direction to perform their defensive slide
Good spacing is only the start. The best modern offences teach players to attack the defence's rotations and play in a permanent 4-on-3 - here is how to coach that read.
The ball screen produces almost half of all professional offensive possessions, yet most teams still teach it as a memorised play. The modern approach trains the read - giving players a framework to decide based on what the defence does, not what the coach called.
The closeout is the most repeated defensive action in modern basketball. With fouls per game climbing in the 2025-26 season, coaches must teach defenders to contest the three without surrendering the drive or putting shooters on the line.
