7 Serve Drills

Amoeba serve game

The drill starts with a player from each side serving a ball. They then go and sit down where their serve landed - assuming it went in (if not they join the back of the line and will have to serve again in a minute). The rest of the players then start serving, trying to serve to their teammate on the other side of the net. If successful and their team-mate catches the ball, they go join them. The drill ends when one team has all of their players reach the other side.

7 Serve Drills

Approach and Jump

Player starts within zone 6, facing the net. Start with right foot in front if right handed, and left foot in front if left handed. Perform 3 steps forward, with third step then turns into a jump. Ensure players transform horizontal speed into vertical elevation.

7 Serve Drills

7 Serve Drills

Hit serve to land before the attack line

1) in pairs the players stand on the baseline on either side of the net. 2) Players then serve from the baseline attempting to place the ball just beyond the net so it drops no further than the attack line.

7 Serve Drills

Run and imitatation

Players start lined up on the baseline. Firstly, they run to the net, touch it and return to their starting point. Then, they imitate a jump serve, on landing they run forward and imitate a spike. To finish they continue running to the net and imitate a block. They then return back to their starting point.

7 Serve Drills

Serve & Receive Accuracy

1) This drill involves a number (a minimum of three) of players standing on the baseline as if ready to serve, with a player standing close to the centre of the net of the receivers side (acting as the setter). 2) Players take turns to serve to the player opposite them on the other side of the net. 3) The player receiving the ball then digs the ball to the player by the net (the setter). That player then catches the ball and rolls it back to the server.

7 Serve Drills

Serving on center line

1) Players are positioned on the attack line in pairs facing each other. This drill requires the players to stand either side of the net. 2) Get the players to serve the ball to each other underneath the net so it bounces on the centre line.

7 Serve Drills

7 Serve Drills

Target Serving

7 Serve Drills

Target serving

Players have a ball each and stand behind the back line. One at a time players must underarm serve the ball over the net and try to get their ball to land inside the target area, which is marked by cones. After serving the ball players must follow their serve, collect their ball and run around the court to the back of the line.

7 Serve Drills

Toss the Ball

Player stands with right leg in front (if right-handed) and tosses the ball with extended arm that they serve with. The ball should rotate more and more times every consecutive toss.
