Tennis: Put Pressure On & Deal With Pressure

Thanks for everything! Sportplan has helped me to improve my tennis...
Andrea, Tennis coach

DESCRIPTION

  • The player starts on the service line. The coach feeds a lob.
  • The player moves to the ball and hits an overhead to the deuce side
  • After the shot, the player quickly moves forward to cover the net
  • The coach feeds a challenging ball down the line
  • The player finishes with a controlled backhand stop volley cross-court

COACHING POINTS

  • In this drill, the player works on a combination of offensive overhead and finishing volley to the open court
  • In this pattern, the player has to understand the difference between the goals of the 2 shots
  • An overhead should put pressure on the rival because of the power involved
  • The volley should be used to win the point with control so the player should aim it short and with angle
  • To make it more competitive, the coach can hit the ball back after the smash in random direction and see if the player is able to react and still place the ball into the open court while being under pressure of not knowing the direction of the coach’s response
