DESCRIPTION

Player starts on the service line.
Cones are set close to the net on the ad side.
Player starts moving forward.
Coach feeds a difficult ball to the deuce side.
Player takes the pace off and hits forehand stop volley down the line.

COACHING POINTS

Hitting stop volleys requires the ability to open the racket and apply backspin.
Players, who open the racquet to slow the ball, either hit with the frame or hit balls that bounce high and far away from the net. Coach should remind players to keep their racket in front of the body and focus on short movements to achieve success with this soft skill at the net.

combination of volley (2nd volley position):

Player hit a forehand volley followed by a backhand volley.

Volley Drills

Taking the ball inside the court:

Both players rally up and down the middle of the court from a central position.

Every so often the coach shouts 'player 1' or 'player 2' and for the next 30 seconds that particular player must not step foot behind the baseline. Every ball they hit must be played with both feet in front of the baseline, however difficult this is.

Rally Drills

Controlled volley then finish down the line:

The coach feeds the ball to the forehand side of the player who stands on the service line.

Player hits a forehand volley to the coach who stands in the middle of the opposite service line to the player.

The coach then returns the ball to the player so he/she has to hit a backhand volley down the line.

Place cones around 1 metre from the service line on the deuce side for the player to aim for.

Volley Drills

Control your distance:

The player stands at the service line and the coach feeds the first ball into the legs to backhand side. The player executes backhand half-volley cross-court and moves diagonally forward. The coach feeds another ball to forehand side and the player finishes with forehand stop-volley down the line.
