Tennis: Different Heights, Same Control

Sportplan has been very helpful in guiding me through my first year...
Bill, Newly qualified coach

DESCRIPTION

  • Player stands on the service line.
  • Coach alternates feeding a low and a high ball.
  • Player hits low and high volleys with control.

COACHING POINTS

  • In this drill player works against low and high balls. These 2 different volleys require a different approach so the coach should explain what players have to do with each shot.
  • With low balls, the player needs to maintain a low position, open the racket and hit the ball with a safe margin over the net.
  • Against high balls, the player should focus more on point of contact, moving the racket forward and stepping after the shot to generate more power.
  • For more advanced players the coach can set up different zones for these 2 shots and see how the player can control the placement while dealing with different heights of the balls.
