Tennis: Control Out The Air

Sportplan has been very helpful in guiding me through my first year...
Bill, Newly qualified coach

DESCRIPTION

  • Player stays inside the baseline.
  • Coach stands behind the baseline on the opposite side of the net.
  • Players rally in cross-court direction. Coach hits higher balls after a bounce, with the player hitting forehand drive volleys out of the air.

COACHING POINTS

  • This forehand drive volley is useful in offensive scenarios and against pushers, who try to hit moon balls.
  • It is important to try to take the ball from a high point of contact and control the power with a significant amount of topspin.
  • By rallying with a partner who is on the baseline, the player can work on drive volley positioning and develop confidence to use this shot in matches.
