Tennis: Catch & Throw Like A Volley

Thanks for everything! Sportplan has helped me to improve my tennis...
Andrea, Tennis coach

DESCRIPTION

  • Working on volleys should be incorporated in the early stages of learning tennis
  • It is not purely about volleying well but it is about not being scared of the incoming ball as also playing without the bounce and without the backswing
  • Kids who are introduced to the net game on mini-court find it easier to come to the net also while playing on bigger court so this transition is smoother if the proper approach is taken with smaller court and softer balls

COACHING POINTS

  • In this drill the player works on physical skills that are needed to execute proper volleys
  • By catching the ball in front of the body, kids learn to move arm forward instead of taking arm behind the body
  • Additionally, by landing on the left leg, kids learn to step forward in the action of hitting volley so later on, it will be much easier to execute the same physical actions while actually hitting the ball with the racket
  • The coach should pay attention to the balance players have because if the position is unstable, they can have problems with hitting few volleys in a row
