Tennis: Agility Volleys

Player stands on his/her right leg on the service line. Coach feeds balls to the player's forehand side. Player hops to the ball on one leg and hits a forehand volley back to the coach.

Players volley co-operatively to each other but with their non racket hand behind their back at all times. For larger groups this drill can be done in groups of four players with one ball moved around between the 2 pairs.

  Player serves wide from the deuce side. Coach throws a short and high ball to the deuce side. Player moves forward and hits an offensive forehand drive volley to the center of the court.

Coach stands in front of the player. Coach throws a low ball to the forehand side. Player steps forward and alternates catching/throwing the ball back to coach and hitting low forehand volley back to coach.

Player stands in the service box without a racket. Coach feeds the ball to the backhand side. Player tries to catch the ball in front of their body whilst stepping forward with their right leg.

Players stay on the service lines and rally together in a cross-court direction. Players have to hit all the balls in the air.

Place a cone in the middle of the court, half way between the base line and sevice line. Coach rallies with the players through the center of the court. The player should be aiming to volley the ball back so it lands as close to the cone as possible. This is to encourage the deep court volley.

Coach and player rally together. Coach hits different balls (left, right, high, low). Player responds with volleys/overheads to the centre.

Players stands on the service line. Coach feeds balls to the backhand side into the legs of a player. Player executes short backhand half-volley cross-court.

Teacher feeds the ball, however the student must shout out when they are about to split step (which would be just before the teacher feeds the ball). Ball is hit to centre of court and student makes a low forehand volley to the target before returning to the line. Concentrate on stopping for split step and controlling the volley.

Player hit a forehand volley followed by a backhand volley.

Two lines in 2nd volley position. player hits a shot and rotates to the back of the other line.

Two lines in second volley position and hits 2 shots and then rotates to opposite line.

Players hit a backhand volley followed by a forehand volley.

One line at centre in second volley position. Players hit forehand then backhand.

One line at centre in second volley position. Players hit backhands then forehands.

The player serves from the deuce side and comes to the net. The coach hits return and both players start to rally together. The coach hits from the baseline while the player has to hit all the balls with forehand volley.

Coach stands behind the player, keeping their racket on the backhand side of the player. Player imitates backhand volley. The coach’s racket limits player’s opportunity to take racket too far back.

The player and coach stands close to the net. The coach changes positions on the court and throws balls to the backhand side. The player executes backhand volley back to coach with control.

The player serves wide to the deuce side and the coach feeds short ball to deuce side. The player hits deep forehand approach shot cross-court and comes to the net. The coach feeds another ball to deuce side and the player finishes with forehand volley cross-court.
