Tennis: Winning with Spin

Thank you very much for the marvellous site.
Nick, Tennis coach

DESCRIPTION

  • Player serves wide from the deuce side using a slice serve.
  • Coach returns cross-court.
  • Player hits a winning forehand drop shot down the line.

COACHING POINTS

  • Here the player works on a specific pattern.
  • Using a wide slice serve from the deuce side is a helpful option to open the court with a reduce risk of making a mistake.
  • A slice serve will force the opponent away from the court so immediately it makes the return difficult and also makes it much easier for the player to hit a winner with their next shot.
  • After a cross-court return it is worth considering hitting a drop shot down the line.
  • The combination of these 2 slice shots in one point can not only surprise the opponent but can also make it really difficult to return effectively.
  • Rivals tend to move back way behind the baseline after seeing a server hitting the ball well inside the court so choosing the option to put the ball with backspin close to the net can lead to easy winners.
