Tennis: Make Them Panic

DESCRIPTION

Player serves wide from the Ad side and moves to the net.
Coach feeds the ball to the backhand.
Player executes a backhand volley down the line into the deep zone.

COACHING POINTS

Hitting a wide serve from the ad side puts pressure on the opponent's backhand and opens the possibility to hit a winner but this can be a risky winner to execute.
For most of the players, it is quite difficult to control the return down the line, especially when they are surprised with server coming to the net, so if this pattern is used occasionally, it can be a quick and simple way to win points.
Players should look to control their volley into the open space of the court.

OFTEN USED WITH...

Doubles returning:

-Players are positioned in a doubles formation as seen in the picture.
-The server will serve first and second serves as in a game situation.
-The receiver will hit any of the returns as shown in the picture.
-The players can play out the points after the return.
-After approximately 6-10 serves the players swop round so that each player gets to serve and return and from both sides.

Knee Serve (single knee):

Player kneels down, putting one knee on the floor. Player serves from this position.

No backhand pattern:

Player serves wide from the deuce side. Coach throws a ball to the deuce side. Player hits forehand down the line and recovers. Coach throws another ball to the ad side. Player runs around and hits forehand inside in.

Serve and Return

Five Alive:

Separate the whole group into teams of around 5-6. Each team nominates a player to feed first.

When ready the feeder throws the ball to each player consecutively until the team has caught 5 balls.

The team getting to 5 first shouts Five Alive and win the first point.

A new feeder is selected by each team, and the next round begins.
