Follow through is a deceleration of the racquet so it is not crucial aspect of tennis' technique. It should be taught only in situation when it limits performance or can cause an injury. Many beginners stop the motion immediately after they hit the ball so it puts a huge tension on the arm and there is a big possibility to have an injury in the near future.
In this exercise, the player has a target to follow the racquet to. Touching calf after the serve is a simple action that can avoid breaks in sport because of an injury. This drill can be also used to improve arm extension in situation when the player stops the motion too early.
