Tennis: Deep 2nd Serve

Tell the players to stand close the surrounding netting of the court and ask the players to throw up the ball and trap it between strings and fence.

Player takes regular position for the serve. Cone is placed in front of the front foot. Player executes regular serve. Cone gives sensory feedback to the player if they moves their front foot forward too early (makes foot fault).  

Place some throw down lines (TDL)2 feet inside the service line. The server has to serve the ball aiming to get it between the TDL and the service line. If the serve is in the designated area and the server wins the point they score 2 points, if its short they score one point

Set up as shown with two cones in one corner of the court. The player at the ends where the cones are works on their serve, with the receiver returning the ball cross court, aiming to hit it between the cones.

TDL = Throw down lines Place some TDL 2 feet inside the service line - Player A only has one serve per point. - If they serve between TDL and the service line and eventually win the point they score two points but if the serve is short they will only score 1 point.

Coach serves from deuce side to the T. Player runs around and hits forehand drop shot inside out.

Coach serves wide from the deuce side, and the player hits a forehand cross-court return, aiming for the ball to bounce in the coned area. The coach then hits a ball again from the deuce side, and the player must come forward and hit a forehand cross-court volley into the coned area.

Player serves only wide deliveries from the Ad side. The goal of this exercise is to get your player alternating between the different spin serves (Kick, Slice, Flat, Topspin).

-Players are positioned in a doubles formation as seen in the picture. -The server will serve first and second serves as in a game situation. -The receiver will hit any of the returns as shown in the picture. -The players can play out the points after the return. -After approximately 6-10 serves the players swop round so that each player gets to serve and return and from both sides.

Player 1 only has one serve. Player 2 is returning the ball whilst 1 metre inside the baseline or closer if the serve is short. Player 2 should be aiming for either target A or B.

Player stands close to the net, but facing toward the back of the court. The player then plays a backhand return without touching the net. The main emphasis of this drill is to shorten your player's backswing.

The player performs regular serve with emphasis on follow through, who then tries to touch left calf 2 times after the serve.

The coach serves wide from ad side. The player hits backhand return cross-court and starts the rally in cross-court direction.

The coach serves from the ad side and the player then hits deep forehand return into ad corner. The coach feeds another ball to the ad side and the player hits deep backhand into ad corner.

Player stands facing the back fence. Player imitates serving motion. Player reaches as high as she can with the racquet and touches the fence with the top edge.

The player stands next to the net and imitates serving action. Player's goal is to touch the net with the hips while being in the trophy position.
