Tennis: Taking the ball inside the court

Thanks for everything! Sportplan has helped me to improve my tennis...
Andrea, Tennis coach

DESCRIPTION

Both players rally up and down the middle of the court from a central position.

Every so often the coach shouts 'player 1' or 'player 2' and for the next 30 seconds that particular player must not step foot behind the baseline. Every ball they hit must be played with both feet in front of the baseline, however difficult this is.

COACHING POINTS

Obviously if the opposing player hits a ball with perfect depth this will be difficult for the working player to respond to if their feet are inside the baseline.

Half volleying this type of ball should not be encouraged usually except if a player has been caught out of position. However for the purpose of the drill and for the players to get the feeling of taking the ball early and being inside the court, it is important they learn to cope in this situation.
