Tennis: Cross Court With Adjustments

Sportplan has been very helpful in guiding me through my first year...
Bill, Newly qualified coach

DESCRIPTION

  • 3 cones are set on the baseline (deuce side, centere, ad side)
  • Player starts from the cone on the deuce side
  • The coach feeds balls to the deuce side
  • the player hits forehand cross-court
  • If player makes the zone, player recovers to the next cone
  • If the player misses the zone, they has to come back to the same cone

COACHING POINTS

  • In this drill, player works on forehand cross-court while covering different distances before hitting the ball
  • In tennis, every stroke is different but players should feel comfortable with hitting in cross-court and down the line directions in variety of situation
  • Hitting forehand cross-court after using one side step is totally different when hitting forehand cross-court after running at high speed so coach should pay a lot of attention to player's footwork and give them feedback about necessary corrections to improve the quality of the shot
  • To make this drill more competitive, coach can award points for making the zone or increase the difficulty of feeding the ball according to the different starting position of the player
