Tennis: Slice against slice

Sportplan has been very helpful in guiding me through my first year...
Bill, Newly qualified coach

DESCRIPTION

Player rallies with a coach using only forehand slices. The player and coach hit in cross-court direction.

COACHING POINTS

Many modern players base their games on powerful shots but it doesn't mean that it is the only way to win. Control and variety are still skills that can get you to the top but you have to be technically-sound and tactically-smart to use opportunities during the match to use these abilities to your advantage. Players who have more than one weapon are harder to beat than players who rely solely on one shot. That is why it is crucial to develop new shots that can give you a straight winner or force the opponent to miss the ball.

In this drill, the player works on forehand slice during the rally. Many coaches don't teach players how to slice the ball from the forehand side because they believe that power is the only option for forehand. However, you do need slice in offence (approach shot), neutral situations (change the rhythm of the rally) and defensive moments (stay in the point). Additionally this shot can give you many benefits against lefties when you put low-bouncing slice ball to their backhands. All shots in tennis are effective but you have to know when to use them. In this drill, the coach should look for consistency but you should also encourage the player to create some variety with height over the net and depth of the ball.
