Tennis: Lateral Forehands Drill

DESCRIPTION

Players start off in doubles alley and move along the baseline hitting 2 forehands.

COACHING POINTS

As players move sideways they must take the last step towards the ball at contact. In this drill the coach feeds the ball from the basket for every shot the player needs to make.

You can vary the feed in a number of ways:

By varying the speed of the feed and the timing between the feeds.

Vary the position of where the coach feeds from (i.e. if the coach feeds from 1 the ball would be coming into the body whereas if the feed was to come from position 3 the ball would be coming across the body creating different problems for the players returning the ball). It is very important when changing the angle of the feed to try and make each feed as realistic to the game of tennis. Try to think where the ball might come from and what the next shot could be.

Attacking forehands on the move:

Coach feeds three balls per player from the basket.

Players should aim to hit the targets (as in diagram - can use cones to mark out targets).

The aim is to encourage players to progressively attack on the move.

Live Ball with Coach:

In this drill the players start in the tram line. With the coach feeding the first ball from the basket, the first player hits a controlled forehand back to the coach who in turn plays the ball in to the open court for the player to run onto the ball and hit a winner down the line. Player then runs around the cone and returns back to the queue.

Players start off in doubles alley (Forehand Corner) and moves along baseline hitting 2 backhands.

In this drill the players start in the tram line. With the coach feeding the first ball from the basket the first player hits a controlled forehand back to the player at the net who in turn plays the ball in to the open court for the player to run onto the ball and hit a winner down the line. Player then runs around the cone and returns back to the queue.
