Tennis: Deal With High Balls

Sportplan has been very helpful in guiding me through my first year...
Bill, Newly qualified coach

DESCRIPTION

  • Coach feeds high and short balls to the deuce side.
  • Player moves forward and alternates hitting attacking forehand after the bounce and forehand drive volley out of the air.

COACHING POINTS

  • The player works on offensive forehands while receiving high balls.
  • There are two ways to respond to this situation: either the player can wait for the bounce and hit the ball on the rise or they can make few steps forward and hit the ball out of the air.
  • Both of these answers allow the offensive player to continue their own approach and reduce the opponent's time for the reaction to the next shot.
  • To make this exercise more challenging, the coach can feed the ball and say "bounce" or "drive" to force players to react quickly and hit given shot.
