Tennis: Weight Transfer

Thank you very much for the marvellous site.
Nick, Tennis coach

DESCRIPTION

The coach throws balls to the backhand side. The player hits backhand and lifts back leg up after the shot.

COACHING POINTS

Proper weight transfer in tennis guarantees good power in all strokes. Players have to understand how the body accumulates energy and what they should do to transfer this energy into the shot. Improper weight transfer wastes all the preparatory effort reducing the quality of the shot. To get the most of the backhand the player should be able to store energy on back leg and transfer it onto the front leg just before the shot.

In this drill the player learns how to add power to the backhand shot. Lifting the back leg up after the shot makes the player understand how the weight transfer works so it is easier to apply this aspect to the backhand stroke. The coach should tell the player to focus on their body sensations to make sure that the player performs all shots consciously. At the beginning it is not important to focus on the ball but after several good attempts the coach should change the player's perception to realise the difference in the power of the shot.
