Tennis: Keep the approach shot low

Your tennis drills are extremely useful coaching tools.
Nail, Tennis coach

DESCRIPTION

The coach feeds medium ball to the ad side, so that the player hits backhand slice approach shot down the line and runs to the net. The coach feeds another ball to the ad side, and the player finishes with backhand volley down the line.

COACHING POINTS

Ability to vary approach shots (spin, direction, depth) are skills that help players to be more dangerous with their net game. Hitting slice approach shots not only puts the opponent in more difficult situation (changing the spin from backspin to topspin) but also it is a great weapon on grass and carpet courts (low bounce of the ball).

In this drill, the player works on backhand slice approach shot and backhand volley. The coach should emphasize staying low while hitting backhand slice approach to achieve better control over the shot. During this exercise, coach can make many modifications with depth and pace of the ball to challenge more advanced players.
