Basketball: Passing and Screening

Once the player passes to the opposite line, they will follow their pass and play defense on the player with the ball. The passer will always go to defense.

Player 2 runs cross court in front of player 1 and receives the pass. Player 1 then cuts in court to receive the return pass. After the receiving the ball they then run into the key and then have a shot.

6 Players on the side line 2 Groups of players behind the base line Players 1 and 4 dribbles the ball to the free throw line and passes the ball to the person standing on the side of the court, who immediately throws the ball back. The player then dribbles to the half way line and repeat. The players on the other side are repeating the practice going the opposite direction.

The idea of this drill is to develop the fast break, with one player dribbling down the middle of the court and the other 2 players acting as outlet players each side. The the ball starts in the middle. This player (1) passes to the outlet player on their right (2). The player with the ball (2) then dribbles directly down the middle of the court. The player that passed (1) the ball then sprints down the right side of the court. The player who dribbled the ball (2) will then pass to this player (1) so they can make a lay up. Once the shot has been taken the passer (2) should get the rebound and outlet to the player who made the shot (1).

Players stand in a triangle shape, with one player at the top and then three others standing opposite. Passing in order each player passes the ball to the player at the top of the circle who must pass the ball back using the same passing technique as was used to pass the ball to them. As soon as the ball is passed back the next player can pass back. Repeat twice then change over.

Get players into pairs. The first pass has to go straight and is thrown into the air for the person on the other side to sprint across and retrieve. The passer runs across to the other side and receives a diagonal pass. On receiving the pass no.1 gives a straight floated pass.

Pass and follow in a square or box formation. Progression: Upon hearing coach’s whistle, immediately react and change the direction that the balls are being passed.

Players are stood in each corner of the court with two players stood in the center circle. On the coach's signal players 1 and 2 start dribbling before passing to players 3 and 4 respectively who return the pass. Players 1 and 2 then dribble further before passing to players 5 and 6 and moving towards the elbow of the free throw line to receive the return pass from players 5 and 6. They then immediately pass to the players 7 and 8. Players 1 and 2 should now replace players 5 and 6.

3 players work with one ball between them inside a quarter of the court. In the middle of the half of area is a cone. Player 1, with the ball in hand, starts on one of the corners of the grid and passes to player 2 after they have run inside the area, touched the cone, and then run outside into open space to receive the pass. Player 2 then passes to player 3 and the drill continues.

Two grids of equal size both with 4 players inside. One team starts with the ball and passes it around inside their area, trying to keep possession. In order to steal the ball and get the ball for their team one player from the other grid is allowed to enter the opposition team's grid and chase down the ball. When they win the ball the player plays an unopposed pass into their grid, follows their pass and then the exercise starts again.

The player under the basket starts with the ball and grabs a self rebound before outletting to the right wing. The player on the opposite wing, meanwhile, sprints to the other end of the floor on their wing. The right wing now passes long to hit the left wing in stride ready for an easy lay up. After passing, the right wing sprints to the cone opposite and runs to the original starting point. The player that started the drill will sprint to the opposite end of the floor as soon as they have passed it, ready to grab the ball out of the net to begin the drill again, with the left winger now being on the left wing at the other end of the court, collecting a pass and playing a long pass to the player that started at right wing.

One player stands on each cone with a fifth player standing between two of the players, with the ball in hand. The player in front of the player in possession should set off on a lead run and receive the pass from the fifth player. After running onto the pass the next player in the square should make a lead run, looking to receive the next pass. After passing players should continue to run until they reach the unoccupied cone.

First player basket cuts and then clears out. Second player pops out to the corner. Third player dives straight to the ball. Fourth player either pops out to the top as the safety or looks for the pass when he pops out to the wing.

First player pops straight to the corner. Second and third player face forward then on the slap turn inwards to screen. Fourth player steps into his defender then cuts hard behind the screen for the jumpshot.

First player basket cuts and clears out to the opposite side of the floor. Second player steps into his defender then pops out to the corner. Third player looks like he is about to cut down the middle then changes direction and screens away for the fourth player to cut to the basket.

Players line up as shown. 2 Basketballs are passed between Player 1 and the other players in a rapid fashion, using either chest or bounce pass.

In pairs one player starts with a ball, with their partner starts opposite them. The player with the ball throws the ball to the cone on either the right or left. The receiving player moves to catch the ball before throwing the ball back to the passer.

Players form a circle and have to call out the name of the person that they are going to pass to before making the pass.

Off the ball screen, practiced in a closed situation. In threes players set up in a triangle. The player at the top passes the ball in either direction then sets the screen on the opposite side to where they have just played their pass. The player behind the screen curls round towards the basket and receives a pass from the player with the ball to shoot a lay-up. The shooting player then collects the ball and runs to the top of the triangle to start the drill again.
