MORE DRILLS

Receive, return and spin

In threes, the players stand in a row, the person in the middle faces player 1. Player 1 then underhand passes the player in the middle, who return the ball back to player 1. The player in the middle then spins around to receive the ball from player 2, whereby he returns it using the underhand pass.

4 Passing Drills

Receiver Goes For The Kill

Two receiver stand in zone 6 and 6, while one setter is in zone 3. Another player performs a serve from the other side, and whichever of the receivers gets the ball, passes to the setter who sets the ball up for the spike.

4 Passing Drills

Run and Dig

Players start this drill on the sidelines. The feeder overhand passes accurately and inaccurately to the worker. The worker is required to underhand pass the ball directly back to the feeder - regardless of how fast or slow they have to approach the pass!

4 Passing Drills

Run and Pass

Set up four cones in a square in one half of the court, with a player and a ball on each. The remainder of your players should line up a couple of meters behind the back line. On the coach's whistle players take it in turns to run out each cone in turn where they play a pass and return before running to the next station to play another pass and return.

4 Passing Drills

Serve And Cover The Zone

Set up the same as in the previous drill. The serving players runs forward after serving while the receiver passes to the setter. The player who didn't receive the ball attacks the set and approaches for a kill. The server then tries to dig the attacked ball in Zone 1.

4 Passing Drills

Set and Move

In threes the players line up in a row, around three metres apart from each other. The players on either end of the line face each other, Player 1 (standing in the middle) starts the drill by passing the ball to one of his/her team mates. Player 1 then runs and swaps position with player 2, who he/she has just passed to. Player 2 passes the ball to player 3, then runs to swap position with player who has just received the ball. Player 3 then passes the ball to player 1 and runs to swap position with him/her.

4 Passing Drills

Set and Switch

Start with the ball with one of the middle players who volleys the ball to the middle player they volley it back to the outside player who then volleys over the two middle players to the outside player on the opposite side as the other players are working the players that have just worked change places and repeat. This exercise is for players to be able to control the ball over differing distances. Again this can either be measured by time or number of good volleys.

4 Passing Drills

Set-run-set and get back

The pair start from the sideline. On the coach's signal player 1 passes the ball forward using a overhand pass so the ball bounces on the other side of court. Simultaneously, he/she must run forward and set the ball back to player 2 after one bounce. Player 2 then overhand passes the ball forward and does the same

4 Passing Drills

Setting - 2 vs 2

The first player starts the game with a throw over the net. The two players on the other side of the net communicate - with one moving towards the net and the other who volleys the ball. The player that has moved to the net faces their partner who passes the ball to them with a high pass from a volley position with the ball above their forehead. The person at the net volleys the ball for their partner who is about 2 metres away from the net facing them with the hand up nearest the net pointing where they want the next high pass to be placed. The player then passes the ball high to the area pointed at and that player moves in, and volleys the ball over the net. Then both players return to a side by side playing position ready to play defence and start the drill again.

4 Passing Drills

Setting up and passing forward

Two players facing each other with one ball between them. Player one overhand passes the ball high above his/her head before forward passing the ball to their partner. Player 2 then receives the ball by setting the ball high above his/her head using a overhand pass before returning the ball to player 1.

4 Passing Drills

Shuffle and dig

In pairs, the players stand on the service line facing each other. Player 1 has two balls. Player 1 then throws a ball to his/her partner. Player 2 has to return the ball using an underhand pass to player 1 who has shuffled sideways toward the net. Both players repeat this action until they reach the net, whereby they continue the action back to the service line.

4 Passing Drills

Shuffle and imitate

Players stand in a row in the centre of the court facing the net. There should be two balls on the sidelines, either side of each player. On the coach's whistle the players shuffle sideways to the ball on their left, imitate an underhand pass, then shuffle back to the centre of the court. The players then repeat the action but move toward the ball on their right hand side.

4 Passing Drills

Shuffle Passing

The coach loops the ball into the air, slightly to the left or the right of the blue cone, and the first player runs out and bumps the ball back into the coach's hands. The player then continues in the direction they were moving and touch the red cone. They then shuffle back towards the middle where they receive their second feed from the coach which they bump pass back. Finally the player shuffles across the other wide cone, touch it and then return to the middle to play the third and final bump pass.

4 Passing Drills

Sideways Underhand Passes

Player underhand pass the ball from both sides of their body. Before the next underhand pass is possible players must rotate their torso and then rotate again while passing.

4 Passing Drills

Spike And Receive

Players work in pairs and have a ball each. They overhand pass the ball high at the same time and then spike the ball off the floor to each other.

Team Passing - Attacking One Handed Tip 2

The person on the side of the mats feeds the ball to the two players who communicate pass the ball to the net for the ball to be set up for an attacking one handed tip to the mat that has not been occupied by the feeder. This means that the attacking player needs to work on creating a good field of vision and observe where the feeder has moved to.
