Exploiting Space

Love the site, it's a fantastic learning tool!

DESCRIPTION

As fullbacks become more adept at defending against wingers it is becoming increasingly important to introduce overlaps into our play utilising our own fullbacks.

In this excess we are using our own wide midfielder or winger to pull the opponents fullback out of position opening up considerable space in behind. Space our fullback is able to exploit before steadying themselves to cross.

There is an element of finishing in this excercise at well but most importantly it is creating the movement required to open the space

COACHING POINTS

- Our fullback should time his run as to ensure he does not allow the centre half time to come across and fill the space.

- The fullback should aim to deliver the cross into the right area as opposed to trying to target our forwards.

- Winger must be sure of touch when bouncing the ball to our play maker

- The weight of the pass must be correct so as to allow our fullback to play forward with their initial tough.

- Additional points can be made to our forwards on the importance of their runs in making their own space such as running across or behind the shoulder of the defender.
