1 vs 2 - with running support

Set Up 15m x 30m channel - One defender two attackers one behind the other 5m apart Lead attacker runs at straight at defender. Attacks space left or right takes tackle and off loads to support player running down opposite channel â that is attackers attacks left â support player goes right

2 vs 1 + 1 in 2 grids

2 attackers with a half back attack a defender The support player should be able to read the situation and apply the best techniques for ball security, either driving out or sealing off the ball.

2 x Hit then pass

Set up the practice as shown inside a 30m x 30m Grid. 6 Shields and 1 Ball. Player 1 carries the ball before passing the ball to player 2 who bursts through the shields. Once through the other side, 2 passes to 3 and receives a return pass before bursting through the next set of shields Once they are through the last two players with shields can move and try and block the runners. Player 2 has the option to pass to either player or go it alone.

3 player circuit

This practice is set out with a inner square and a outer square. The players in their groups of 3 stand between the lines of the inner square with the working group stood inside the other players. The first group of 3 starts to run across the grid passing the ball. When they reach the centre the ball is put down and they then run at a players with the pads on their left each pushing their player to the outer square. The players then swap. The pad players run across to the tackle bags and push and tackle the bags to the outer square. Players swap again now the new 3 players (third group) run to the ball pick it up and take the ball turn right to face the 3 players on the 12 o'clock side of the square and run into contact for the ball carrier to present the ball. This ball is then picked up by the 3 players being pushed back and the drill starts again.

From the start position, run out to the centre set of cones. Quickly move sideways to the left set of cones and then move quickly sideways to the right set of cones. Return sideways to the center set of cones and then run quickly backwards to the start position.

Agility Fitness Drill

Set up the practice as shown above. 40m x 20m Grid. Groups of 4 Player start in the bottom right corner and on the command sprint as a group before doing 5 press ups. They then side step left to the next set of cones to do 5 sit ups before sprinting to do press ups. The group follow this routine until the end before the next group go.

Agility Slalom - Race

Set up the cones as shown. 12 Cones with 2 balls. Start with 2 players on the centre cone, each with a ball, and facing each other. On GO, the both run backwards to the first cone then side step up the grid to the second cone before running through the slalom cones back to the start where the ball is passed to the next players who only go when each player has received a ball.

Attack until you're tackled

Set Up Playing area of 25m in length â adjust width to suit numbers- equal numbers in both teams Full LEG tackles ONLY â ball carrier when tackled can off load immediately or IF no support present when support arrives â game continues until knock or forward pass occurs. When a try is scored the try scorer turns to attack the other try line game continues playing the opposite way. No rucks or mauls.

Groups of 6+ Ball3 Attackers line up opposite 2 defenders. The ball carrier takes the ball hard up to the line. A trialer runner stays hidden behind ball carrier.The 2nd Reciver does an out to in line of running (acting as the short crash ball) The trialer runner runs an arking line out the back (acting as a out wide option) The Defence make a decion whether to bite on the short runner or wide runner.The ball carrier tries to make the right option of what ball to give.

The second player then runs out to the next set of cones and passes the ball to the third player, who runs out to the next set of cones. In the last area of cones, the ball has to be passed quickly amongst all the players.

Rugby League - Touch Rugby Var...

Split your players into two teams, giving one group of players a set of coloured bibs to set them apart, and quickly tell your players the following laws: <div> No forward passes. When touched, stop and set the ball down. Another player from your team will act as scrum half - passing the ball to his teammates, who will continue the attack. Each team will be allowed five touches before they must turn the ball over (you can make this more or less depending on the skill level of your players and what you're hoping to achieve during the session.) Some coaches decide on unlimited touches, only turning the ball over when a mistake is made by the attack e.g. a knock on. Knock on's and other law infringements will result in a turn over to the opposition. Don't be afraid to play these laws a little, e.g. for younger players you might even go as far as to allow some knock on's or turn a blind eye to the odd forward pass - let them play a little and have fun! </div>

Set a grid to attack. Defenders and attackers begin on the touchline in the centre. Both leave at the same time and run around appointed cones, ball carrier should accelerate up towards defender channeling them however they want realising that they have two other support runners for different options to run in and score.

Set-up a 10 meter grid with a player on each corner. Player 1 starts with the ball. Player 1 passes the ball to player 2 and then quickly moves off their cone and runs to the cone where player 2 is and back to their cone. Player 2 then passes to player 3, follows the pass to the position of player 3 and back to their starting position. The aim is to for the players to be back in their starting position before the ball returns back.

Rugby League: Presenting the B...

Good for younger rugby players to learn how to go into contact and set up the ball at pace, you can use it as a competition between the team with a limit of time etc. 2 tackle shields, 1 ball 2 people are on the tackle shields about 5 metres apart facing each other, there is a ball carrier standing in the middle of the two defenders. Ball carrier runs in to one defender and places the ball. Once placed, he gets to his feet quickly and runs into the next defender doing the same. This process can continue for as short or as long as you like, a good challenge would be 30 second limit to get in as many hits and ball placements as possible.

Defence drill ideas for my U8's?

Hi,Just wanted some ideas on drills for Under 8's to teach defence. For example we set all kids up in a line but as soon as the other team play the ball all kids run up and try to tackle. It is great enthusiasm shown by the kids however they are unable to reset into a line which means as soon as the other team plays the ball there is big open gap that they other team can get through.
