Pitch is split into three zones with players from two teams assigned to each zone. Teams attempt to
maintain possession and score points by moving the ball from end zone to end zone. This can be done either
directly or via the central zone. Ball must be under clear control of receiving player for point to stand.
1)This exercise helps to develop tactical positioning & spatial awareness! Players must develop an understanding with team-mates in order to combine and score. Players must be aware of activity within their own zone and 2 others. Players are responsible for both attacking and defensive duties within their zone and turnovers will be frequent. Defenders must close down space, mark, attempt to get in front of attacking player and goal, attempt interceptions. Players must be on their toes at all times, ready for action!
2) This exercise helps to develop awareness and decision making under game-like conditions. In order to be successful, players must be aware of what is going on around them and how the game is developing. When receiving a ball, players can move the ball away from a marker, dribble into space, towards a team-mate etc. A glance over the shoulder before receiving a ball will provide more information from which a decision can be made. Communication and understanding with team-mates is also vital.
3) Players can be coached to not stop the ball whenever possible! Players stopping the ball and adjusting their feet will give defenders time to make takles and interceptions. Players can be encouraged to receive the ball on the back foot and use their first touch to move the ball.
4) Emphasise the importance of control and fitness within the game!
This exercise provides an opportunity to reinforce the importance of control to all aspects of the game. Players with good control and first-touch will have a massive advantage when it comes to making decisions during game. The importance of fitness conditioning as it relates to technique must be considered as a player will mostly be asked to perform these actions after exerting a considerable effort and for a full 90 minutes.
