DESCRIPTION

This activity is to work on playing out of the back in the 2-3-1 shape in 7v7.  The goal of this activity is to promote the movement of both the ball and players to keep possession of the ball in our end while looking for the forward penetrating pass to our striker.

Setup

  • Half of a standard 7v7 field
  • 2 cones to mark the retreat line
  • A number of balls by the GK to minimize time wasted.
  • 2 Pug nets for targets

Players

  • 6 attackers(GK, LCB, RCB, LM, CM, RM)
  • 4 defenders (LM, ST, RM, CM).

Activity

At the start of each round building out from the back, the goalie and players prepares as if starting from a goal kick.  Defenders setup at the retreat line.

Once the ball has been played and touched by an attacker, the defenders are allowed to press and attempt to win the ball.  Start with 2 pressuring players on the retreat line with the other two defenders behind the target nets.  When the initial pass is made, the defenders behind the target nets must perform a skill (ie. 10 toe taps) before they are able to join the defense.  Once the ball is touched by an attacker the defenders on the retreat line can pressure the ball.

The objective of the attacking team is to complete 5 passes and then look for the penetrating pass to one of the target nets.  If the defenders win the ball, they look to combine to shoot on goal.

Progressions

  • Increase the number of passes required before the penetrating pass.
  • Provide an incentive for the attacking to team to switch the play from one side to another
  • Require the team make one pass back to the keeper
  • Limit touches to two or one.

COACHING POINTS

  • Body position when receiving the ball, be open to see as much of the field, ensure as many options upon receiving and setup for your first touch
  • Use First touch to move the ball away from pressure to allow for dribbling or pass.
  • The weight and quality of pass, the ball must move quickly and to the foot that would help the receiver to move away from pressure.
  • Movement off the ball to provide support to the person receiving the ball
  • Use of space and creating passing shapes (triangles and diamonds)
