DESCRIPTION

In this training session led by coach C. Hughes, the 6 first team players of montys PLATÃNOS will be put through 4 basic drills which will hopefully develop their overall performance in games during their week weekly fixtures. All players should benefit from the drills including the goalkeeper which often isn't the case in many training sessions. The thought behind this session is to develop key attributes needed to succeed in game situations but to also integrate members of the team who may be quite distant away from the pitch.

Drill 1- this drill involves all 6 players. The players must separate into pairs and take one football between them. This drill can be easily adapted depending on the playing environment. The easiest way is to stand in a close proximity from your partner and simply pass the ball Into their feet. The players must use both feet and try and take one touch before pass. To increase the difficulty, the players can move further away from eachother and start using different methods of passing such as a lofted pass, a drill pass and also using different parts of the foot to execute an accurate pass.

Drill 2 - only 5 outfield players are required for this drill. The players must locate them selves at different parts of the pitch or around the goal. Their will be targets to hit in the bottom corners of the goal such as cones and balls. This is developing shooting skills and kinaesthetics to show that hitting the ball into these areas of the goal is the best way to score goals.

Drill 3 - this drill once again only requires the 5 outfield players. This drill is just a simple possession game which consists of 3 attackers/ players in possession and 2 defenders trying to disrupt the passing game. The playing area can be made larger to make it easier or smaller to make it harder. This drill can also by conditioned by by changing how many touches or passes the attackers may have, if the conditions are breached sanctions/ punishments can be given by the opposing team such as press ups etc. This drill droes not only teach players how easy it is to play by making the ball do the work but also develops teamwork and communication skills.

Drill 4 - during drill 2 and 3, the goalkeeper only and one person acting as coach will perform this drill in one of the goals. The drill will focus on situations a keeper may be exposed to in a game situation. It starts by basic handling skills by throwing the ball into the keepers hands from a reasonable distance, this gives the keeper a chance to get a feel for the ball and instigate the kinaesthetics he has stored in his long term memory. This next part of the drill is focusing on diving technique by doing slo- motion dives and dives from a kneeling pavilion to once again just get used to the surface, balls etc. The next focus will be on footwork by laying cones out for the keeper to side step round and keeping in a "set" position towards the play and also reacting to simple shots into the close proximity around his body. Lastly, the keeper will be in his goal with his back to play and a shot will be fired towards the goal and he will turn just after the shot has been taken, however the save will be harder to deal with than expected and will test the keepers reaction time, agility and shot stopping skills as there will be obstacles and distractions on the edge of the area which will deflect the ball off track into a different direction.
