Part Practice - Functional Drill

Create three possession grids 18 yards away from the attacking goal - central grid is 35x25 yards with the two wide channels sized 15x25 yards Central grid has three attacking players against two defending players. Each wide grid has one attacking player against one defender. One server acts as a deep lying central midfielder and can pass into any grid (initially the central grid). Server passes the ball to an attacking player in the central grid, they combine to create attacking opportunities. The initial aim is to create an opportunity to score by playing a penetrative through ball to an attacker Into the attacking area. Get the football to an isolated 1vs1 wing scenario. Here the winger (Outside attacking midfielder) penetrates using individual skills running at a full back. Encourage passing interchange between wide and central areas - can a diagonal through ball to a wide player be made, creative passing and combination play should be rewarded (wall passes). Encourage the deep lying midfield server to get involved to create and overload in the wide areas. Can they overlap like full backs or can they combine with the wide player to get in behind the wide defender. Inside runs and movement from the wide forwards means the defending teams full backs maybe become occupied with more central positions. When this happens the attacking full b can take up more advanced positions in the channels that open up on the wings.
