MORE DRILLS

2 Player Passing Drill

Two players stand about 10m apart, and underarm pass to each other. The cross on the floor is the area where the ball must bounce. Drill enhances passing accuracy.

3 Grass roots

Basic Passing Drill

A basic passing drill in pairs, can be used for either the dig pass or overhead pass

3 Grass roots

Beginners Set Drill

A drill to improve hand to eye co-ordination for beginners. The player uses their wrists to hit the ball up in the air. The ball can bounce on the ground before it is knocked up in the air again.

3 Grass roots

4v4 with ref

Simple 4v4 game with a referee using normal rules.

3 Grass roots

4v4 without ref

Play a simple 4v4 game using normal rules, but without the game being refereed. Players will have to make decisions for themselves and be fair, so it is important that players know the rules of the game well.

5 Player Warm Up

As Player 1 moves direction, players 2,3,4,5 shuffle around shadowing his movement. When Player 1 changes direction, the other players must do so too, staying in the box formation.

3 Grass roots

Ball arm to arm

Players start with the ball in one hand. Players lift the ball across their body and allow it to bounce once. Players side-step following the movement of the ball, ensuring they are in position for the next stage of the drill. Now catch the ball in their other hand and repeat in the opposite direction.

3 Grass roots

Bounce Up and Receive

Volley the ball to your partner who volleys the ball to themselves one time whilst you do two block jumps this is then repeated by your partner.

3 Grass roots

Catch and Volley over the net

Players work in pairs, this can be done with players facing each other without a net or with one player on each side of the net. Player 1 sets the ball across to player 2 who catches the ball and then sets the ball back again.

3 Grass roots

Defensive Dig and Push Drill over the net

A defensive dig before a push into the air and then sets across the net to player 2

3 Grass roots

Defensive Dig and Push Drill over the net

A defensive dig before a push into the air and then sets across the net to player 2.

3 Grass roots

Dig bounce single arm

Each player has a ball and will attempt to keep this ball in the air by "digging" it using only one arm.

3 Grass roots

First time Overhead Passes over the net

Two players stand either side of the net and pass the ball overhead first time to their partner on the other side of the net.

3 Grass roots

Grassroot serving

2 players, 1 ball. The player serving has to hit the ball over the net so that the other player can catch the ball. If they are successful 3 times in a row the player can take a step back and move closer to the back line. Once players reach the back line they can swap roles.

3 Grass roots

Jump and Throw - Spike development

Players have a ball each and make an attacking approach with the ball in hand. As they reach the net they should put the ball behind their head, jump and throw the ball over the net into the opposition court.

3 Grass roots

Jumping to Spike

Players move towards the net as the coach feeds the ball up. Players must position themselves close to the net and aim to catch the ball at the peak height, with both arms up in the air.

3 Grass roots

Pass and Throw Over the Net

One player of each side of the net

3 Grass roots

Passing Pattern - Dig, Pass and Set

Players start this passing pattern with a defensive dig to themselves, followed by a push into the air and then set the ball across the net to player 2 who repeats this pattern. Dig - (self) Pass - Set

3 Grass roots

Passing/Throwing Styles

Every pair or every 4 have a ball. Pass the ball across the net with partner catching. Do the same with outstretched arms or underhand right foot forward. NOTE: If there are an odd number of players, use a triangle.

3 Grass roots

recognise the space

8 players per court, 4 players as feeders and 4 players as returnees. Change roles after a set time (i.e. 3 minutes). Feeders: Throw the ball with lots of height over the net in the direction of the player. The receiving player has to be in the middle of the court. Receiving players: Catch the ball and roll it back under the net to the player that did not have the ball before the practice started. Player should go to the back of the queue after each time.
