Spain's men are undeniably the masters of keep ball. Keeping possession was integral to their 2010 World Cup victory. They may have only scored 1.17 goals per game but that didn't matter as they only conceded 0.28 per game!
To help your team emulate the tiki-taka style of football this session practices a variety of ball retention skills, starting with individual skills and then building to team keep ball skills.
"If you don't have possession, you cannot attack Spain. If they control the game, you cannot cause them problems? safety first is seen as hoofing the ball miles away. But it is safer to keep hold of it." Sid Lowe
What's in the Session?
We start with a pass and move game with a twist. The twist being players use their hands to pass the ball!
Following this fun warm up game we then practice holding up the ball and shielding it from defenders. Through 1v1 practice we teach your shielding players to have a good low body position, with knees bent be using their arms to feel where the defender is.
Now it's time work as a team with two group possession exercises working on passing and moving to keep the ball, before finishing with a full pitch game designed to work on passing up the pitch with good possession play!
