Defensive Conditioning Drill

The coach will roll the ball in a straight line. When the ball is rolled the players must sprint to get in front of the ball Once the player has got in front of the ball, the player must go backwards in a defensive stance to stay in front of the ball.

Set up as shown in the image. Players will run to the first diagonal cone and close-out by chopping their feet. They will then sprint to the cone at the half way line. Once they get there, they will slide across the half way line to the other side of the court. To finish they will back pedal to the baseline.

Defensive Denial Drill

This drill will need 1 person with a ball and a offensive and defensive player who will be set up between the cones. The offensive player will run from cone to cone. The defence must keep a hand between the ball and the offensive player to stop a pass going through.

Dodge Defender and Find Space

Have a player or the coach on one side of the court with a ball, looking to pass to the attacker. The attacker should start on the other side of the court and will try to get past the defender and get closer to the ball so he can receive the pass.

Double drop step

From the block do a spin back, drop step to the power box, lift fake from the chin position, jump step to a hook. Concentrate on not bringing the ball down below the shoulders. When shooting learn to keep the ball up from the chin position. If you move that ball even a centimeter away from that body the defender will be able to knock it away. Do twenty each side of the double drop step.

The attacker draws the defender to tackle him He beats the defender by passing the ball between his legs before suddenly changing direction and driving off to his left

Drop step and pivot

In a drop step, one leg moves first then the turn of the body. With a drop step you are trying to get one foot past the defenders foot, the body and the foot move at the same time

This drill needs 1 passer and 1 player posting up ready to shoot the basketball. The pass will be made into the post, once the player receives the ball they will drop step, jump stop and shoot a power move off the backboard.(Watch the video to see the footwork of the move)

Drop Step Middle- Reverse Pivot

There will be 1 passer and 1 Post up/Shooter. The player posting up will receive the basketball and drop step middle. Once they have got to the middle, the player will reverse pivot on their inside foot and shoot a jump hook with their outside hand.

Player will drop step to the middle, once they get to the middle they will forward pivot on their inside foot and finish with a power move off the backboard.

There will be 1 passer and 1 Post up/Shooter. The player posting up will receive the basketball and drop step baseline. Once they have got close to the basket they will then perform a reverse pivot(the player will pivot on their inside foot). When the player has done the reverse pivot they will shoot a jump hook.

The attacker executes a dummy to go left, drawing the defender, before suddenly changing direction and driving off to his right

Eggbeater - drive and shoot

Set up: 2 balls, 2 lines of players behind hoop on baseline. Player drives around and out to recieve a pass from the opposite line and puts a shot up.  Ball gets passed to line on opposite side driven from.  Progression: Drive wider and shoot or lay up.
