Faking the Defender

The attacker draws the defender to steal the ball. As the defender commits to the steal, the attacker steps away from the defender and drives forward

Footwork and Movement

Footwork - Quick Stop

Players are lined up on the baseline. The coach will be on the other side of the court. When the whistle is blown the players will start to jog. When the whistle is blown again the players will perform a quick stop to simulate them catching the ball in triple threat ready to shoot. This is continued to the other end of the court.

Footwork and Movement

Footwork pivoting Drill

Blue 1 moves to the middle to receive a pass from red 1, as they catch the ball they must land with either a jump stop or a stride stop. Blue 1 then pivots on the correct foot to face the line they came from. They then pass to the next player in line. Blue 1 then pivots again to face where the pass came from and runs to join the back of that line. The drill is then repeated. Ensure the players catch the ball in the air. Younger and inexperienced players tend to catch the ball then perform a jump/stride stop. The player in the middle must perform a pivot with the ball. If they land with a stride stop they must not move the foot that landed first.

Footwork and Movement

Footwork Shooting Drill

Player 2 runs to the furthest cone before running back to the next cone. They then run forward to receive a pass from player 1 before turning and shooting.

Footwork and Movement

Footwork warm up

Players run around, avoiding the hoops on the floor. When they hear the whistle they must perform a stride stop (this is where their first foot lands inside the hoop and second outside). The foot inside the hoop is not allowed to move. The player must then pivot on their standing leg before then jogging off in another direction. When players hear two whistles they must jump stop, landing inside a hoop with both feet together. Player then select their pivot foot, moving the non-pivoting foot out of the hoop in order to pivot and change direction.

Footwork and Movement

Get Free from Defender

Player 1 starts with the ball and waits for Player 3 to lose their marker (player 2 in this case) before passing the ball to them. Player 1 then goes into become the defender and Players 4 and 5 are the attackers.

Footwork and Movement

Get free using a S Cut

Three players (1 defender and 2 attackers). Player 1 runs towards the defender before making an S-Cut and receiving the ball from Player 3. Player 1 then turns and shoots before colecting the rebound and throwing it to player 5. Player 3 then goes into be the defender, with players 4 and five as the attackers.

Footwork and Movement

Get Open Drill

This is a pass and run to the back of the opposite line drill, with a v-cut movement before the pass. Player 1 starts in the triple threat position whilst 2 makes a v cut. Player 1 then passes the ball to player 2. Player 2 fakes a pass to player 1 who now cuts towards the basket. Player 3 (stood behind player 1) now v-cuts to the front of their line. Player 2 passes the ball to player 3. Player 4 (stood behind player 2) makes a v-cut to the front of their line. Player 3 passes the ball to player 4.

Once the offensive player is in front they will have a very wide stance, showing a hand target where they want to receive the basketball.

Footwork and Movement
