Setup: Create a 20x30-yard grid. Place a marker (wall, cone, or mannequin) in the center of the grid. Instructions: Players are arranged in two lines at opposite ends of the grid. The drill starts with Player A playing a square pass to Player B to their right. Player A immediately begins an overlapping run around Player B. Player B dribbles at pace toward the center marker. Near the marker, Player B lays off the ball to Player A, who completes the overlap. Player A plays a first-time pass to the next player in line, restarting the drill.
Key Focus: Quick Movement: The overlap should be explosive and well-timed. Accurate Passing: Ensure all passes are sharp and to the right target. Controlled Dribbling: Player B should dribble with pace while maintaining control. Communication: Players should call for the ball and signal their movements. Coaching Points: Stress the importance of timing the overlap so the pass is seamless. Encourage players to perform the drill at game speed. Focus on proper technique for first-time passes and lay-offs. Monitor body positioning to ensure players stay balanced and agile. Progression: Add a passive defender at the center marker to increase difficulty.
