Drill for coaching defensive and midfield lines to shift to pressure the ball the point of danger. 5 attackers (red) v 2 defenders (white) 1. Attackers score by dribbling ball over the line (between 2 blue cones). 2. Defenders score by winning possession and playing one pass. 3. Attackers must only pass side and back (rugny rules) - ball can only be advance forward by dribbling. 4. If ball goes out of play return to start position - no points scored by either team. I use this for initially coaching defenders and midfielders to shift to the ball as a unit and adjust position as the point of danger changes. Rule 3 removes penetrating runs in behind allow defenders at this stage to concentrate on remaining as a unit as they shift to the ball. Adaptations: Add / remove attackers / defenders if one team is dominating. Widen the area if defenders are dominating or to increase intensity. Increase to 2 or more passes for defenders to score to progress transitional play.
1. Nearest defender pressure ball to stop attacker advancing. 2. Position body to show attacker to side where help is (towards other defender). 3. If 1st defender gets beat, covering defender should try to take up best position to slow attack until team mate recovers. 4. Try to 'slide' as a pair when the ball is passed maintaining close proximity to one another.
