Stay compact Keep the defensive and midfield lines close together, roughly 10â15 yards apart as an initial guide. Stay narrow enough to protect central passing lanes. Distances will change as the ball moves and opponents threaten behind. Protect the middle first Deny central passes, especially passes into forwards between the lines. Encourage opponents to play into wide areas, where the touchline can help you defend. Move together as one unit When the ball moves left, everyone shifts left. When it moves right, everyone shifts right. When the opponent plays backward, the team can move forward together if it is safe. Pressure, cover, balance The nearest defender applies controlled pressure when appropriate. The next provides cover, and the others protect dangerous spaces. Avoid multiple players chasing the same ball. Be patient and recognize pressing triggers Don't chase the ball unnecessarily. Press more aggressively when an opponent takes a poor touch, receives facing her own goal, or is isolated along the touchline. Have a plan when we win the ball Look forward quickly when possession is regained. Find a forward, attack open space, or use a supporting teammate to escape pressure. Don't just kick the ball away.
