Bethany Whittaker Coach, England

DESCRIPTION

Split players into two equal teams, one team will be defenders and the other team attackers. One defender and one attacker will go at one time. The defender will start with the ball, they will play the ball into the attacker, once the attacker has the ball at their feet the defender can then approach the attacker using the four steps to defending (see coaching points). The aim of the defenders role is to win the ball back and knock it out of the playing area, this will be one point to the defender, however if they force the attacker into making a mistake and the attacker knocks the ball out then the defender still gains a point. Once each player has had to chances, the roles are swapped. (IF the attacker gets past the defender, the attacker can score in the goal opposite to where their team is)

COACHING POINTS

- Four steps to defending; Fast, this is to deny the space between them. Slow, this is to make sure the defender doesn't overrrun. Side, this is to try and force the attacker into a small space outwide Low, this is to help us defend when they make a mistake as it's easier to change direction quicker. - When using the four steps, it will help force the attackers to the sideline. - Defender should force him to the side that best suits him/her (strong side for the defender)
